When MLA was hired to work on the Asylum facility, the special effects company was a start-up, intent on providing post-production visual effects for feature films, music videos, and television commercials. The client wanted to develop an existing 10,000 sq. ft. space, which required extensive renovations including an acoustically engineered screening room, to create a state-of-the-art facility. An added challenge was accommodating the company's anticipated growth throughout the design and construction process.

Accessed by entries from two sides, the T-shaped floor plan is focused on an elegant, circular reception area. Whereas technology often dominates the aesthetics in this equipment driven industry, Meyer Architecture adhered to a clean and sophisticated look by developing a plan to distribute the massive amount of wiring from the Machine Room to the CGI and Inferno Bays through a perimeter system of operable maple cabinetry. This system allows for wiring and fiber-optic upgrades without the limitations of pulling cable through conduits. The result is a flexible infrastructure to accommodate the technological changes in the industry.

Marshall Long Acoustics helped to develop the interior acoustics, audio visual systems, room to room noise isolation, and HVAC noise control for the screening room. This included innovative surround sound loudspeakers, which were acoustically decoupled from the wall structure and the adjacent spaces. We also provided isolation for both the film and video projectors. The ceiling was configured to maximize the ceiling height, while allowing for the oversized ventilation ducts. Bass traps were included by utilizing found spaces in the ceiling and below the raised seating platform.

Today, Asylum is a premier visual effects and design company with over 100 employees handling high-profile features, commercials, music videos, and emerging media content for web and mobile platforms. They have an extensive filmography and have done spot work for brands such as Nike, Sony, and BMW. In addition, Asylum Design has created award winning title and graphic design work for numerous films.
