Performing Arts

Theaters, concert halls, multipurpose auditoria and sound studios obviously require particular care in the design of room size and shape, surface treatment, sound isolation from both interior and exterior sources and isolation of mechanical and electrical systems. Early in the project ML/A engineers establish the appropriate use mix and acoustical criteria for each type of space and develop solutions consistent with the overall design and budget. ML/A represents the state of the art in theater design and makes frequent contributions to the literature in this challenging field. We assist architects and designers in developing the proper solutions to acoustic problems within the constraints of function, esthetics and budget. We also provide all important field inspections during construction in these critical facilities.

Building Acoustics

Architectural acoustics includes control of exterior and interior noise, vibration isolation, proper design of rooms for reverberant noise and echoes. It is of particular importance in multifamily housing to include suitably constructed party walls, floor ceilings and mechanical equipment isolation. ML/A engineers can provide design, documentation, specifications, acoustical analyses and inspections during construction to insure a quality project. Compliance studies required by state and local ordinances are completed quickly, accurately and inexpensively.

Sound System Design

For years ML/A has worked with clients in developing high quality electro-acoustical sound reinforcement systems which are designed to provide excellent intelligibility within the architectural constraints of the installation. We can furnish the electro-acoustic design, plans, specifications and installation supervision for sound systems in theaters, auditoria, outdoor entertainment facilities, recording studios, and open office plan areas. Our engineering is based upon custom modeling software, in-depth field testing, and years of practical experience.

Environmental Noise

Environmental noise is a universal concern in modern society and its control is a highly developed science. By consulting on projects at an early stage we can identify potential problems and recommend appropriate solutions. ML/A can prepare acoustical analyses of multifamily dwellings, environmental impact studies, airport contouring, analysis of highways, community noise surveys and noise abatement recommendations. By making field and laboratory measurements on the problem sources we can precisely calculate the required degree of noise control.

Government Research

Governments are faced with a wide range of acoustical problems from the support of basic research to the drafting and implementation of environmental laws, planning documents and general enforcement policy. ML/A has developed well researched, clearly written studies for Federal, State and Local governments. We have done basic research in acoustics, written building codes and noise laws, prepared general plan documents and trained government personnel in acoustics and noise measurements and assisted in the design of government buildings and other projects.
